Overview

Getting to know Darjeeling

Darjeeling is where we started, and it's still where our local knowledge runs deepest. It's a genuine hill town, not a resort built for tourists — narrow lanes, working tea estates, and a toy train that still runs through the middle of it.

Because it's compact and well-mapped, Darjeeling is the one destination where we run fixed, tested sightseeing circuits rather than building every route from scratch. Below are the seven we currently offer.

Best time to visit

Darjeeling is driest and clearest from March to May and again from September to December, when Kanchenjunga is usually visible from Tiger Hill. The June–August monsoon brings heavier rain and a higher chance of cloud cover at viewpoints, though the tea gardens are at their greenest.

Things to do

What Darjeeling is known for

DO & SEE

Tiger Hill at sunrise

The classic pre-dawn viewpoint over the Kanchenjunga range — the reason most people set an alarm this early.

DO & SEE

Batasia Loop & Ghoom Monastery

A war memorial where the toy train spirals around a garden, and one of the region's older monasteries nearby.

DO & SEE

Padmaja Naidu Zoo & HMI

The zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute's museum sit on the same grounds in town.

DO & SEE

A working tea garden

A walk through the rows of one of Darjeeling's tea estates, with a chance to see how the leaf is grown and picked.

DO & SEE

Barbotey Rock Garden

A slower-paced terraced garden with small waterfalls — a calm add-on to a busier day.

DO & SEE

Mirik & tea country

A full day further out to Mirik's lake, the Pashupati border market, and Gopaldhara Tea Estate.
