Best time to visit Darjeeling, Sikkim & Meghalaya

Three regions, three different rhythms — here's how to pick dates around what you actually want.

The North East hills don't run on one calendar. Darjeeling, Sikkim and Meghalaya each have their own best windows, and picking the wrong one can mean clouded-out viewpoints or closed mountain passes. Here's the honest breakdown.

Darjeeling

Clearest from March to May and again September to December — this is when Kanchenjunga actually shows up at sunrise. June to August brings the monsoon: heavier rain, more cloud cover, but also the greenest tea gardens of the year if photography matters more to you than mountain views.

Sikkim

April to June brings rhododendron blooms across the high passes, and October to mid-December gives the clearest skies of the year. Winter (January–February) closes some higher routes to snow, which can actually be its own kind of trip if that's what you're after — just plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

Meghalaya

Counterintuitively, Meghalaya is at its best during and just after the monsoon (June–September) — the living root bridges and waterfalls this region is famous for need the rain to look their best. October–April is drier and more comfortable for trekking, but the falls run noticeably thinner.

Our take

If you're combining more than one region in a single trip, October to early December is the closest thing to a sweet spot across all three — Darjeeling and Sikkim are at their clearest, and Meghalaya is just past peak monsoon with waterfalls still running strong.
